It all began with a single penny in a collection jar about three years ago.  Along the way, students at Highline Elementary School in Aurora, Colorado raised over $50,000.  That's a lot of money that could go to a variety of projects, maybe a new swimming pool, or a playground, or buying human beings out of slavery.

That's exactly what the STOP (Slavery That Oppresses People) club did.  While most kids their age were spending their money on Britney Spears or Pokemon, these young humanitarians were actually doing something about one of the great evils in this world.  How many adults can say that?

To be honest with you, I would even know where to start, maybe a search engine scan...these hardworking students have been sending money to the Sudan where thousands have been enslaved, and as many as two million people have died in the civil war.  What an incredibly inaccurate description of this catastrophy.  There's nothing civil about wholesale rape, torture, dismemberment, enslavement, inhuman cruelty and destruction.

It's a terrible, festering sore on the face of human kind.  Many of the world's leaders have chosen to look the other way, but not these kids in suburban Denver.  What began with a single copper coin has now caught the attention of students around the world.

They had hoped for a meeting with Secretary Of State Albright and the President, but due to some unfortunate mishandling by their handlers, the meetings never came off.  Instead, the kids got a picture of the presidential cat and dog.  It's possible the administration administrators  were just too busy trying to secure the prez's place in history with last-minute diplomacy, or maybe thier PR folks simply misread how important these kids and their ideals really are.

I'd personally like to thank these young leaders...Implicitly for helping free numerous people from their captors, but also for inspiring the rest of us to do something. Instead of being self-absorbed, rich, lazy and self-centered, they actually achieved something amazing.  There are so many wrongs that can be righted, if only adults would follow thier example.  On behalf of all people everywhere, we'd like to say,  "Good Job!".
