Gay
4 Pay
My mechanic is gay, but that
has nothing to do with where I take my car for service. I work hard for
my money and expect real service. Her prices are reasonable and her standards
are high, so her sexual identity does nothing to influence my choice. If
I had to choose between two companies offering the same value, I might
let sexual orientation become a factor, but it will never be the only factor.
I support gay businesses within reason, |

but I won’t spend my money on
an inferior product or shoddy work.
Not to beat a dead horse,
a gay identity is not enough to get my business. Consider please the following:
I actually found an advertisement for a gay dentist in one of the local
bar papers. It showed a picture of a smiling handsome man, with the caption
"How’d you like me inside your mouth?". I for one don’t care if my dentist,
lawyer or plumber is gay or straight, and though I wouldn’t be offended
if he or she was attractive, it’s not the criteria I use in selecting one.
And in my opinion, using a sexual double entendre does nothing
to promote an atmosphere of professionalism.
I guess my question is this:
Does anyone actually buy into this? Are we so naive that we might actually
be fooled into shelling out bucks for inferior junk just because we think
we’re supporting the gay community? Or in the case above, does anyone choose
a dentist because they think there gonna end up sleeping with him?
Admittedly there are cases
where a gay/gay friendly business is desirable. In the age of AIDs and
various STDs, my sex life does affect my health, so my doctor does know
I’m gay. He isn’t, but he has no problem with it, so we are able to talk
freely. Admittedly, I have had to explain a few things to him, but it turned
out to be a vernacular problem, and actually nothing he hadn’t encountered
before. My counselor knows I’m gay, but then I’m not about to pay her prices
and spend the hour carefully converting pronouns before I speak.
I don’t know if my dentist
knows I’m gay or not, I don’t care. Frankly, it’s never come up. Even if
it did, I doubt I could answer him, what with his fingers in my mouth.
I have no clue as to his sex life, and I’m happy to leave it that way.
Believe me.
I have a friend who is gay,
and owns his own business. He makes a habit of supporting the businesses
that support his, which makes sense to me. In the end he’s supporting himself.
I guess I’m not opposed to seeing more gay businesses competing against
their straight counterparts, but if they want my business they’d better
offer a good product and good service at a fair price. Actually, if they
could do that I wouldn’t care if they were gay at all.
