An open letter to the
programming Managers of WCBV-TV
Boston Ma.
Dear Folks:
It has come to my attention
that you have agreed to carry Paramount TV’s "Dr Laura Schlessinger Show".
Why?
Ok, I know that’s a bit direct.
I’ll try again. Why are you choosing to supply an opinionated, bigoted,
controversial, egotist an open forum to spout disrespectful, hate filled,
ill-conceived bile?
The fact is Laura Schlessinger
is nothing special. She is merely the latest in a string of shoot from
the lip, loud mouthed radio shock-jocks packaged as a voice of reason in
a designer dress. On her radio show she is curt, often rude, patronizing,
and offensive. She will often regurgitate her own cut and dried opinions
without bothering to listen to the background of her caller. The woman
appears to have a curious perception problem, seeing everything in black
and white without single bothersome shade of gray.
Obviously, the controversy
around Laura Schlessinger is primarily associated with her comments about
homosexuality (which I will address), but it is not limited to this. Laura
Schlessinger is an equal opportunity offender, lashing out at single parents,
mixed marriages, working parents and a host of others who do not live up
to her definition of morality. Laura Schlessinger does not live up to MY
standard of morality.
I am a homosexual. I am not
a "sexual deviant, a sexual predator, a biological error or a pedophile."
I live in Manchester NH, and I am a frequent viewer of your broadcast.
I am the person your advertisers are trying to reach. Indirectly, I’m the
guy who signs your paycheck. Having said that, if you choose to broadcast
Laura Schlessinger, I will certainly think less of your station and simply
choose to change the channel.
As you are aware there is
a national protest against Paramount TV and the Laura Schlessinger show.
By this time tomorrow, a protest will have been staged in front of your
station. Obviously others share my opinion.
I gathered most of the information
concerning your association with Paramount and Laura Schlessinger from
a webpage, and in a related story I learned that you were considering Not
carrying the program. I wholeheartedly endorse this choice of action.
Consider please: If you choose
to carry the program you will be one of hundreds of stations carrying a
program that is destined to be short lived. Reports indicate that test/rehearsal
audiences find the show dull, hostile and mean-spirited. These were paid
audiences. If Mrs. Schlessinger cannot develop a rapport with people paid
to sit, smile and applaud, how can she hope to win over a real audience?
If, however, you choose not
to carry the program in question, you will be the first. You will get national
recognition as the station that said no to the good Dr. and her litany
of hate. Other stations may follow suit, but you will have been the first
to stand up for something more important than the all-mighty dollar.
So, I humbly ask you to say
no to Laura Schlessinger.
Respectfully
Java Mann
