"Dr." Laura says I am a sexual deviant. "Dr." Laura says I am a biological error. She says I am dysfunctional, sick, and twisted, the moral equivalent of a pedophile or a necrophile. And I thought we were friends. And what hurts, what really hurts is she couldn't tell me to my face. Laura Schlessinger is Not a Doctor, no matter what she or her press agent might say. Her field of study was psychology, but she never finished her doctoral program. She is however, the highest rated radio personality in the U.S. This, in my humble opinion puts her somewhere between Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh, though nowhere near as entertaining. What amazes me more than the fact that people listen to her, is that they actually call her. People call her for advice, and she, with only the most minute details makes moral judgement about their lives for the entertainment of her listeners. Make no mistake friends, this is not about education or enlightenment, it's about entertainment. Her program is the radio equivalent of the TV's Divorce Court. Laura Schlessinger makes caustic hurtful statements about gays and lesbians because it gets her high ratings, and because she can. Homosexuals have become the latest scapegoat of the far right: the last minority one can publicly malign without fear of social exile. But perhaps I'm being to hard on her. Perhaps the fault lies with her audience who accept simple answers spoon fed to them without the need for thought (which only upsets digestion). Let's be real, AM radio listeners are not the last great bastion of independent thinkers. They like easy to swallow sound bites that affirm their uneducated pre-conceived notions without the need for pesky facts or research. Perhaps, when the luster fades (fame is fleeting) and her audience finds something even easier to digest (Barney perhaps), Mrs. Schlessinger might find the time to continue her studies. When she does, she will be amazed to find that the America Medical Association, The American Academy of Pediatrics, and both the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association (that is to say REAL Doctors) have publicly repudiated her "findings" about homosexuality. And perhaps when this does happen she will take the moral high road and admit she was wrong. But I doubt it.
